The Town — The Barrier Island — The Setting
Orchid, Florida.
A small incorporated municipality on Florida’s Atlantic barrier island in northern Indian River County — ZIP 32963. Bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the Indian River Lagoon, and on either flank by federally protected coastal habitat. 211 Beachside Drive sits on the barrier island within the town.
The Setting
A quiet stretch of the Atlantic barrier island.
The Town of Orchid was incorporated in 1965 on a narrow strip of Florida’s Atlantic barrier island north of Vero Beach. Its full length runs between two waters — the open Atlantic to the east and the Indian River Lagoon to the west — and the entire municipality shares ZIP 32963 with the surrounding barrier-island community.
To the west, across the lagoon, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 as the first federal wildlife refuge in the United States. To the north, Sebastian Inlet State Park anchors the tip of the barrier island. To the south, the Jungle Trail runs the length of the island under a canopy of live oak and cabbage palm — a Florida Heritage road preserved from the early twentieth century.
Mainland access to the town is by Wabasso Causeway (County Road 510), which lifts across the lagoon to the barrier island a short drive south of the town line. The ocean-side road running the length of the barrier island is State Road A1A.
